Can You Get Your Learner's Permit Online?

A handful of states now allow you to take the written knowledge test online, but most still require an in-person visit to the DMV.

States That Offer Online Permit Testing

As of 2026, the following states allow some form of online or remote permit testing:

Indiana: Offers online knowledge testing through approved providers.

Iowa: Allows online testing through approved driver education providers for teens enrolled in driver ed.

Virginia: Offers the knowledge test online through DMV2Go or at approved driver training schools.

Several other states expanded online testing during COVID-19 but have since returned to in-person only.

Why Most States Require In-Person Testing

Most states require in-person testing for several reasons: identity verification (they need to confirm you are who you say you are), preventing cheating (in-person tests are proctored), vision screening (most states require a vision test at the same visit), and photo capture (your permit photo is taken at the DMV).

What You Can Do Online

Even if you cannot take the actual test online, most states allow you to: fill out the permit application online before your visit, schedule a DMV appointment, download and study the driver handbook, and take unlimited practice tests.

The Best Strategy

Study online, test in person. Use free practice tests to prepare thoroughly, then visit the DMV confident and ready. Most people who study properly pass on their first visit.
