Which States Offer the DMV Test in Portuguese?

Portuguese is one of the more common secondary languages for DMV testing in the United States, driven mainly by the Brazilian and Portuguese-American communities in the Northeast and South Florida. The availability varies by state.

States That Offer Portuguese

  • Massachusetts: Offers the written RMV test in Portuguese. Heavy demand in metro Boston and the Fall River and New Bedford area.
  • New Jersey: Offers the written MVC test in Portuguese. Used primarily in Newark, Elizabeth, and the Ironbound neighborhood.
  • Connecticut: Offers Portuguese at most DMV offices.
  • Rhode Island: Offers Portuguese at all full-service offices.
  • New York: Offers Portuguese at most DMV offices statewide, audio included.
  • California: Offers Portuguese at most field offices; must be scheduled in advance in some locations.
  • States Where Portuguese Is Not Offered

  • Florida: English only since February 6, 2026. This is a major change for the South Florida Brazilian community, which had long studied in Portuguese. See our Florida English-only guide.
  • Georgia: English only for the written test.
  • Most Midwestern and Southern states: English and Spanish only.
  • What to Do If Your State Does Not Offer Portuguese

If your state does not offer the test in Portuguese, you have three practical options:

  • Study in Portuguese and test in English or Spanish. Read concepts in Portuguese using a handbook or our translated lessons, then practice test questions in the test language.
  • Ask about an interpreter. Some states allow a state-certified interpreter. See our interpreter guide for state rules.
  • Practice bilingually. Our platform includes Portuguese translations on all practice questions so you can study in Portuguese and see the English version on the same screen.
  • Study Plan for Brazilian Portuguese Speakers

    Week 1: Concepts

  • Day 1 to 2: Read your state's driver handbook once. If available in Portuguese, start there.
  • Day 3 to 4: Study road signs. Shapes and colors are universal — memorize them visually.
  • Day 5 to 7: Focus on right of way, speed limits, and DUI and alcohol laws.
  • Week 2: Practice

  • Day 8 to 10: Take one full practice test per day.
  • Day 11 to 12: Take timed practice tests.
  • Day 13: Review your weakest topics.
  • Day 14: Test day.
  • Key English Vocabulary for Brazilian Learners

If your state requires English, these terms appear on almost every DMV test. Learning them first gives you a huge advantage:

  • Yield — dar a preferencia
  • Merge — entrar na via
  • Right of way — preferencia or direito de passagem
  • Pedestrian — pedestre
  • Crosswalk — faixa de pedestres
  • Intersection — cruzamento
  • Shoulder — acostamento
  • Roundabout — rotatoria
  • Impaired — sob influencia (de alcool ou drogas)
  • Seat belt — cinto de seguranca
  • Turn signal — seta or pisca
  • Tips for Brazilian Portuguese Speakers

  • Watch for false cognates. English traffic vocabulary has some words that look Portuguese but mean different things.
  • Learn the American customary units. Distances in miles, speeds in mph, and weights in pounds — different from what you grew up with.
  • Understand U.S. right-of-way culture. U.S. drivers stop more strictly at stop signs than in most Brazilian cities. The DMV expects a full stop with all four wheels stationary — not a rolling stop.
  • Study the state-specific rules. Move Over laws, school bus passing rules, and teen driver restrictions are common test topics that differ between states.
  • Start Practicing

If you are in Florida, Massachusetts, New Jersey, or another state with a large Brazilian community, the best next step is a practice test. Our platform supports Portuguese on every question.
