Do You Need an Appointment?

It depends on your state and what service you need. Most states now strongly recommend or require appointments for certain services, but many still accept walk-ins.

States That Require Appointments

California: Appointments are strongly recommended for all services. Walk-ins are accepted but wait times can exceed 2 hours without an appointment.

New York: The NYC DMV requires appointments for most services. Upstate offices may accept walk-ins.

New Jersey: MVC requires appointments for most in-person services since 2020.

States That Accept Walk-Ins

Florida: Walk-ins accepted at most DHSMV offices. Appointments available and recommended.

Texas: Most DPS offices accept walk-ins. Some mega centers require appointments.

Pennsylvania: Walk-ins accepted at most PennDOT locations.

How to Get an Appointment

Most states offer online scheduling through their DMV website. Book as early as possible — popular locations can have wait times of 2 to 6 weeks for appointments. Check for cancellations regularly — spots open up frequently. Some states offer a mobile app for scheduling.

Tips to Minimize Wait Time

Go early on weekday mornings. Tuesday through Thursday are typically the least busy days. Monday mornings and Friday afternoons are the worst.

Avoid the first and last week of the month. These are peak times for renewals and registrations.

Have everything ready. Bring all required documents the first time. Coming back for a missing document means starting the wait all over again.

Use online services when possible. Many states allow you to renew your license, change your address, and pay fees online without visiting in person.
