What Is the DMV Written Test?

The DMV written test (also called the knowledge test or permit test) is a multiple-choice exam that tests your understanding of traffic laws, road signs, and safe driving practices. You must pass this test before getting your learner's permit or driver's license.

Every state has its own version of the test, but they all cover the same core topics.

How Many Questions Are on the Test?

The number of questions varies by state. Most states have between 20 and 50 questions. Here are some examples:

  • Florida: 50 questions, 80% to pass
  • California: 46 questions, 83% to pass
  • Texas: 30 questions, 70% to pass
  • New York: 20 questions, 70% to pass
  • Illinois: 35 questions, 80% to pass

The DMV written test covers six main areas:

    1. Road Signs (25-30% of the test)

You will need to identify signs by shape, color, and meaning. Warning signs, regulatory signs, construction signs, and guide signs are all tested.

    2. Right of Way (15-20%)

Questions about who goes first at intersections, roundabouts, and when yielding to pedestrians and emergency vehicles.

    3. Safe Driving Practices (15-20%)

Following distance, lane changing, night driving, bad weather driving, and defensive driving techniques.

    4. Speed Limits (10-15%)

School zone speeds, highway speeds, residential speeds, and the basic speed law.

    5. Alcohol and Drug Laws (10-15%)

BAC limits (0.08% for adults, zero tolerance for under 21), implied consent, DUI penalties.

    6. Licensing and Vehicle Laws (5-10%)

Permit requirements, graduated licensing, insurance, registration, and vehicle equipment.
