How Long Does the DMV Test Take?
Plan for the full DMV visit to take 1 to 3 hours, though the actual test itself is much shorter.
The Written Knowledge Test
The written test itself takes most people 15 to 30 minutes. States with more questions (California has 46, Michigan has 50) naturally take longer than states with fewer questions (New York has 20, Pennsylvania has 18).
There is usually no strict time limit, so you can take your time. Read each question carefully, especially tricky ones about distances and right-of-way.
The Road Driving Test
The road test typically takes 15 to 25 minutes of actual driving. The examiner will direct you through a predetermined route near the DMV office.
In addition to driving time, allow 5 to 10 minutes for the examiner to inspect your vehicle before the test (lights, signals, brakes, registration, insurance) and 5 to 10 minutes for the post-test evaluation.
Total DMV Visit Time
Budget 2 to 3 hours for the entire visit, especially if you do not have an appointment. Here is a typical breakdown: waiting in line (30 to 90 minutes without appointment, 10 to 30 with one), paperwork and document verification (10 to 20 minutes), the test itself (15 to 30 minutes), and getting your photo taken and receiving your permit or license (10 to 20 minutes).
How to Shorten Your Visit
Make an appointment online if your state offers it. Have all required documents ready before you arrive. Fill out application forms at home if available online. Arrive early, especially on weekdays.
